What Is Link Equity? How Authority Flows

Link equity is the ranking value a link passes from one page to another. Internal links distribute the equity your site already earned so the pages you care about get more of it.

Explain It Like I'm 5

Link equity is importance-juice that flows along links. Popular pages are full of it and share it with whoever they link to. By choosing which pages your best pages link to, you decide who inherits the juice.

Understanding Link Equity

Link equity, historically called link juice, is the value a hyperlink passes to its destination: relevance signals from the anchor text and context, and authority flowing from the linking page's own strength. External links bring equity into the site; internal links move it around.

Equity flow is attenuated and dilutive. A page passes value through its links; more outbound links mean each receives a smaller share. Pages deep in the site, reachable only through long chains, receive less than pages linked directly from strong hubs.

The strategic core of internal linking is equity routing. Most sites have a handful of naturally strong pages (the ones that earned backlinks). Deliberate links from those pages to commercial or priority pages route earned authority where it converts, instead of leaving it pooled on informational content.

Equity survives redirects (301s consolidate signals to the new URL) and dies at broken links, nofollow historically withheld it, though since 2019 nofollow is a hint rather than a directive, and sponsorship attributes give Google richer labeling options. The practical guidance remains: keep link paths live, short, and pointed at what matters.

Types of Link Equity

External Equity Inflow

Backlinks bringing authority into the domain from outside.

Example: A industry blog linking to your ultimate guide.

Internal Equity Distribution

Links within the site moving authority toward target pages.

Example: The ultimate guide linking contextually to your product and pricing pages.

Why Link Equity Matters

You cannot control who links to you, but you fully control how earned authority circulates inside your site. Equity routing is the highest-authority lever most sites never pull.

External links earn equity; internal links distribute it
Dilution: more links per page means less value each
Strong pages can route authority to priority pages
Broken links strand equity; redirects preserve it

Best Practices

Route Authority From Strong Pages

Identify your most-linked pages and add contextual links from them to pages that need authority, the money pages and near-miss rankings.

Keep Click Paths Short

Every hop attenuates value. Priority pages should be reachable in a few clicks from strong hubs, not buried at depth five.

Prune and Consolidate Links

Audit for broken targets and redirect chains, and update them to direct live URLs so equity stops leaking.

Anchor Context Carries Relevance

Descriptive anchors tell engines what the destination is about. Equity plus relevance is the full value of a link.

Common Mistakes

Letting equity pool on informational pages

Fix: Guides that earn links but never link onward waste their inheritance. Every strong page should route authority to something that converts.

Burying money pages at depth

Fix: Product and landing pages five clicks from anything strong receive a trickle. Connect them from hubs directly.

Ignoring broken outbound internal links

Fix: Every link to a 404 pours equity onto the floor. Audit and repair them; redirects recover most value.
